SILENT SCREAMS The 1925 Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera has been given a glorious restoration, re-creating some of the primitive hand-coloring techniques lost to time. It gets a screening later this month courtesy of the Alloy Orchestra, a trio-orchestra including Mission of Burma’s Roger Miller on keys, who’ll provide a live score | October 28 at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Sq, Somerville | 8 pm | 617.876.4275 | Meanwhile, the DIY art-rock trio Devil Music reprises its score for the F.W. Murnau-directed vampire classic Nosferatu (1922) on Halloween night at the Coolidge Corner, 290 Harvard St, Brookline | 617.734.2501. "SYNCOPATED RHYTHMS" Contrary to an item we erroneously published two weeks ago, George Wein isn’t dead. Far from it: the creator of such revered institutions as the Boston jazz club Storyville, the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is alive and well, and just celebrated his 80th birthday this past Monday. In addition to being one of jazz’s great promoters over the past half-century, Wein and his late wife, Joyce, collected quite a bit of art, most of it by black artists, among them Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Lewis, Allan Rohan Crite, Beauford Delaney, and Hughie Lee-Smith. "Syncopated Rhythms: 20th Century African American Art from the George and Joyce Wein Collection" will be the first public showing of their collection, at Boston University Art Gallery, 855 Comm Ave, Boston | opens November 18 | 617.353.3329. One Man Star Wars Trilogy Charles Ross’s tour de Force condenses the long-ago-far-away saga into a lean, mean 75 minutes or so, and yes, he does it Solo. He also does it Skywalker, Leia, Vader, Chewie, and the rest of the Lucasfilm universe, including sound effects. Hailed by everyone from the Village Voice to Mr. Lucas himself (Ross was invited to perform at the Episode III premiere), the Off Broadway smash visits the Hub next month | November 8-13 | Wilbur Theatre, 106 Boylston St, Boston | $38.50 | 617.931.2787. |
