Nud Pob
Thai food that gets the nod
BY DEIRDRE FULTON
Previous Columns

The food comes fast, hot, and heaping at Comm Ave’s Nud Pob (resist the temptation to call it Nod Pub), nestled below street level in the middle of Boston University’s campus. But convenience isn’t all this tiny Thai establishment has to offer. At Nud Pob, where bustling cooks work in a miniscule strip of a kitchen, professors stop in for an afternoon meal, and students get take-out late into the night, you can get big tastes for small prices.

Order from the counter and find a spot at either the one long table, where groups and couples sit cafeteria-style, or along the wall of individual tables for two and four. In a matter of minutes, you’ll hear your number called, and soon you’ll have before you a more-than-satisfying mountain of your favorite veggies, noodles, meat, or rice.

You can start with some traditional appetizers, such as the steamed vegetable dumplings ($5), which come in a sweet soy sauce, or the scallion-and-herb-stuffed pancakes ($4.50). The coconut soup ($2.85), which you can get with chicken or shrimp, tastes fresh and crisp, thanks to dashes of lemongrass and cilantro.

For a filling main course, try the star noodles ($6.25), a stir-fried jumble of flat noodles, shrimp, chicken, mushrooms, sprouts, and carrots. Or, for something a little lighter, there’s the mango delight ($8), a house-specialty mixture of chicken and chunks of mango, onions, and summer squash. Of course, no Thai establishment would be complete without curries, and Nud Pob offers seven variations ($5.70–$8.95), all available with your choice of tofu, chicken, beef, pork, duck, or seafood. If you’re in the mood for an old stand-by, the rich and peanuty pad Thai ($5.95) is the ideal comfort food for a cold afternoon.

Nud Pob, located at 708 Comm Ave, in Boston, is open Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 10:30 p.m. Call (617) 536-8676.
