Clear Flour Bread
Loafing around
BY TAMARA WIEDER

  PREVIOUS COLUMNS

The sad fact is, I am never going to be one of those people who go on a low-carb diet. Respect and admiration to those who’ve got the willpower to subsist on vegetables and chicken, but I need my bread. Lots of it.

And now that I’ve discovered Clear Flour Bread, I’ll probably be eating even more of the stuff. Tucked away on a quiet street in Brookline, the tiny Clear Flour shop is packed full of scrumptious loaves, baguettes, bâtardes, focaccias, and other bready delights. Varieties including French (25 cents–$4, depending on size), roasted-potato garlic ($1.50-$3), Venetian olive (75 cents–$1), sourdough (75 cents–$5), and scali ($3) are available seven days a week; regular daily specials ($3–$4) include polenta, porter pumpernickel, organic whole wheat, challah, raisin cinnamon, golden fruit tea, and sunflower sourdough. So take your low-carb menu and have yourself a low-carb field day; I’ll have my bread and eat it, too.

Clear Flour Bread, 178 Thorndike Street, Brookline, (617) 739-0060.
