When one thinks of Milwaukee, one thinks of beer. Usually, however, one pictures millions of mass-produced macros and gleaming assembly lines teeming with cheap aluminum cans. But Sprecher Brewery, in Glendale, Wisconsin, offers affirmation that craft-brewing is indeed flourishing in locales other than New England and the Northwest. Sprecher brews a wide variety of beers (a special amber, an imperial stout, a pub ale, and an Abbey tripel are just a few among them). But it’s the Hefe Weiss, grainy and a little spicy, crisp and refreshing, that’s best-suited for these torrid and torpid late-summer days. Then there’s Sprecher’s Ravin’ Red, a gourmet soda pop made with fresh cherry and cranberry juices, ginseng, and a taste of honey. (The company brews a whole line, including root beer, orange soda, and ginger ale.) It’s restorative enough on its own, but even better when used as a mixer: commingle one part Ravin’ Red with three parts Hefe and you’ve got a pleasing new cocktail, with the sweet-tartness of the soda a bubbly complement to the beer’s citrus and banana notes. Sprecher Hefe Weiss is available for $6.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce bottles, and Sprecher Ravin’ Red is available for $1.50 for a 16-ounce bottle at Bauer Wine & Spirits, 330 Newbury Street, in Boston.
