APRÈS VOUS . . .

The dipshit Partridge Family–like opening credits don’t bode well for director Pierre Salvadori’s French farce, except for the name "Daniel Auteuil." Here the parrot-nosed actor lends a touch of sophistication and bemusement as André, an affable waiter in a chi-chi restaurant who saves Louis (José Garcia, an odd cross between Colin Farrell and Danny DeVito) from hanging himself. André takes in the depressive, gives him a job, even tracks down the florist who dumped him (Sandrine Kiberlain) — and that’s where he starts tying his own noose. The ensuing love triangle benefits from Auteuil’s conflicted decency, though few surprises come from a string of contrived mix-ups. The laughs too are scant, save for a visit to Louis’s cataracts-impaired grandmother and a pantomime involving a lobster. And it’s hard to figure why André would tolerate Louis’s more maddening behavior. Nonetheless, rampant lip pursing aside, Auteuil remains a magnetic presence, making it easy to forgive this jaunty comedy about altruism its faults.
