Hockey Night, "For Guys’ Eyes Only" (Lookout!) Lookout! has been rebuilding its once bubblepunk-laden roster, and Hockey Night are one of its best new acquisitions. They’re a couple of genre-hopping Ritalin kids apt to spit preposterous raps over their bridges, and this track shows why they’re ready to bring the label into the ’90s. The Oranges Band, "Ride the Nuclear Wave" (Lookout!) Fronted by ex-Spoon bassist Roman Kuebler, the Oranges Band are another Lookout!’ experiment. This track offers a hungry shark, the fish lodged in that shark’s stomach, and a couple of killer couplets. The 101ers, "Letsgetabitarockin" and "Keys to Your Heart" (Astralwerks) Before Joe Strummer set out to change the world with "the only band that mattered," he was doing the pub-rock thing with the 101ers. The band’s only full-length will make its CD debut next month on Astralwerks. In the meantime, these two song samples offer a taste for anyone not lucky enough to have heard the vinyl disc. Marc Mulcahy, "A Smack on the Lips" (Loose) Former Miracle Legion frontman Marc Mulcahy has always enjoyed better press in Great Britain: Nick Hornby dedicated a chapter of his Songbook to "Hey Self Defeater," and Thom Yorke’s been quoted as saying, "He has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard." Mulcahy’s new In Pursuit of Happiness is out on his own Mezzotint label, but here’s a great track you won’t find there. |
