They gutted out arenas like Gillette with Green Day, and now, as they prepare to record a follow-up to Futures, they’re capitalizing on all that exposure with a quick EP. Jimmy Eat World’s Stay on My Side Tonight (Interscope) isn’t due ’til Tuesday. But as all you Web-savvy folks know, all five tracks are already available online at iTunes and half a dozen other sites detailed at http://www.jimmyeatworld.com/main.php. "DISINTEGRATION" Tense, moody, deliberately paced, and, at almost eight minutes, an emo mini-opera with great quips like "hanging on a cigarette . . . you burned me" and guitar swells that hint they’ve been spinning some Cure on the bus. "OVER" Every emo band needs a good break-up song. Now Jimmy Eat World have like, oh, two dozen. "CLOSER" "Every day I try a little harder, dear/But those things you do I don’t want to hear": make that three dozen, only this one explodes with irresistible aggro guitars. "HALF RIGHT" A gorgeous cover of a song by Heatmiser, the band Elliott Smith and Neil Gust had before Elliott went off on his own. A lost gem, reverently resurrected. "DRUGS OR ME" They make the choice so much harder by handing the Futures track over to Styrofoam, who come through with a truly twisted techno remix. Hey, all the kids are doing it. |
