Phile under "Anglo"
BY COLIN FLEMING

British and American humor have always been two very different beasts. And, there’s also that strain of Britpop that conquers the sceptered isle effortlessly yet never manages to penetrate the great American cultural conscious. Here’s a little of both.

"FREE LOVE (FULL VERSION)"

Sir David of Brent dons the mask of comedy for this musical romp from the fourth episode of the original English version of The Office. Here’s the entire version, earnestly sung, and unedited for TV. (There’s also a Noel Gallagher mix for true Anglophiles.)

STONE ROSES

"MADE OF STONE"(LATE SHOW PERFORMANCE)

Web posters still debate whether the Roses were responsible for the equipment malfunction on this, their British television debut. The power cuts out, the song breaks down, and it’s Ian Brown time, stage stalking — "Amateurs! Amateurs!" An admonition to "rattle your jewelry" for the baggy-trouser set.

THE MUSIC

"GETAWAY"

Sans guitarist Adam Nutter at this Denver gig, the band find themselves nearest to a blend of Northern Soul–era Verve and an acoustic Free. And not haplessly — sing the same words in double the normal time and there’s your poignancy . . . I guess.
