Notes

BY SARAH TOMLINSON

With CAVE IN’s new Perfect Pitch Black (Hydra Head) about to hit stores, the band members’ busy schedules are keeping them from playing their own CD-release show. Several ingenious fixes have been floated. Frontman Stephen Brodsky suggests, "We can assemble a clan of Kraftwerk-like doubles to perform instead, which would allow us to kick back and celebrate without the toil of setting up and breaking down." No such luck: at the listening party for the disc at Black Out Bar this Wednesday, September 7, Brodsky will play a solo set on a bill with guitarist Adam McGrath’s new band, Clouds. Cave In will reconvene with Converge drummer Ben Koller for a late-fall tour co-headlined by Doomriders — look for a tour-only "surprise package" CD featuring songs the band recorded with Koller this summer, including "Shapeshifter" and "Dead Already." . . . After putting the breaks on CRACKTORCH this spring to pursue other projects, drummer and New Alliance Recording Studio mainstay Nick Zampiello reveals his hand when his new band STU WALKER play the Middle East this Wednesday, September 7. The band’s debut CD, Theft, Arson, Murder and Death (imagine a collaboration between the Andrews Sisters and Foetus), received a limited release from the local indie Odd Halo, and a second album is almost complete. Stu Walker’s sound reflects Zampiello’s "love of anything noir, dangerous, mysterious, sexy, and dirty." Zampiello’s other band, the electro-flavored CAMPAIGN FOR REAL TIME, are also nearing completion of an album and have landed both British and US labels. Catch them at T.T.’s on September 13 . . . The Swedish glam-pop group the SOUNDS finished up a 10-day session last week with Paul Kolderie, who mixed their new, as-yet-untitled album at Camp Street Studios. It’s due this fall on Scratchie/New Line Records. Kolderie says he’s looking to expand by partnering with Fleetwood Studios in Revere early next year. Fleetwood has a long history: it’s believed to be where the SHAGGS recorded Philosophy of the World . . . In the meantime, Kolderie’s recording an album for DEAR LEADER that according to drummer Paul Buckley is due in February or March. Buckley, who also runs Dear Leader’s label, Lunch Records, is keeping busy in his role as marketing director for First Act Guitar Studio. The new custom guitar shop at 745 Boylston Street kicks off a week of grand opening shows this Wednesday: they include invite-only gigs by Paul Westerberg, Idlewild, and Mike Doughty plus open-to-the-public freebies by JULIANA HATFIELD on September 8 and MARY LOU LORD on September 9.
