Vanna, "Dead Language for a Dying Lady"

Just eight months after their first show, the Boston-based metalcore band VANNA have signed to Epitaph Records and are writing material for their debut album. Epitaph’s director of on-line and video promotion, Matt McGreevey, stumbled across the band on MySpace, caught a gig in LA, and got the thumbs-up from honcho Brett Gurewitz to grab ’em. For a listen, check Vanna’s myspace page, or see them Sunday at Jarrod’s Place in Attleboro.

Atmospheric indie-rockers VERONA DOWNS have signed to Rhode Island’s Empyrean Records, which has also released Eric Matthews and Pinetop Seven. The band are recording a five-song disc, The Light Reaction EP, with good friend Darren Ottaviani at the Moontower in Cambridge, and an LP will follow early next year . . . Boston street punks A GLOBAL THREAT have signed to Los Angeles’s BYO label, which is helmed by the Stern brothers of hardcore legends Youth Brigade. A new album recorded with Richard Marr at Galaxy Park Studios in Allston is due in February and will be accompanied by a full US tour. Since their long-time friends the Unseen and Clit .45 have worked with BYO, were A Global Threat fans of the label? "Not at all. Well, maybe," quips singer Bryan Pogo. "They did those awesome comps in the ’80s, but that’s about it. And Youth Brigade ruled. And they did those cool split LPs. So the real answer is yes." . . . Worcester native JACK O’SHEA survived an auto accident by his pop-punk group Bayside last week, but some of his mates weren’t so lucky. Drummer John Holohan died when the band’s van flipped after hitting an ice patch outside Cheyenne, Wyoming, and bassist Nick Ghanbarian underwent surgery for a broken back. Bayside, who are managed by former Bosstones and Kickovers guitarist NATE ALBERT, were traveling between stops on a tour with Victory Records label mates Hawthorne Heights. O’Shea attended Tufts and played in the local prog-metal outfit FINGERBOMB before joining Bayside in 2003. He and singer/guitarist Anthony Raneri, who received only minor injuries, plan to rejoin the tour November 16 in St. Petersburg. They’ll play acoustic sets for the remaining dates before regrouping to continue touring early next year . . . Reggae-tinged rockers the EXIT took former VIGILANTES bassist Jeff DaRosa with them when they relocated from Allston to New York City. Now the group are releasing a new version of 2004’s Home for an Island on Wind-Up Records. The trio re-recorded the album last spring with Chris Shaw (Bob Dylan, Ted Leo) at New York’s Avatar Studios and added three new songs including up-tempo rocker "Pressure Cooker" and "Warm Summer Days," an update of their anti-war-themed "Soldier," which also appears on the album. "The unfortunate thing about the whole thing is that nothing in the nation has changed at all, so the album is just as relevant as it was about a year and a half ago," says singer/guitarist Ben Brewer. The band break from touring with 311 to play Sunday at the Middle East with the Detachment Kit.
