Notes

BY SARAH TOMLINSON

With the new Mission of Burma album in the can, drummer Peter Prescott and fourth member/tape manipulator/sound engineer Bob Weston are reuniting their other art-punk band, VOLCANO SUNS, for a December 29 show at the Middle East. They’ll be joined by KUDGEL, whom Weston once recorded at Steve Albini’s house. You can thank Yo La Tengo guitarist/vocalist Ira Kaplan, who asked the Suns to play his band’s annual Hanukkah residency at Maxwell’s in Hoboken; they not only accepted, they decided to play a home-town show as well. Unlike Burma’s re-formation, however, this one won’t be permanent. Prescott can’t offer any set-list spoilers, since the list hasn’t been worked out yet, but old fans can rest easy. "There’ll be nothing new. It will be a total reunion-whore type, hopefully songs that everybody knows, really just pure fun." . . . How did local street punks TOMMY AND THE TERRORS land a revered (not to mention busy) Dropkick Murphys drummer to produce their new album, Unleash the Fury (TKO Records, due next month)? "We have some information about Matt Kelly — a leprechaun and a bottle of Hendrick’s Gin that he would rather not have see the light of day — so he jumped at the chance," says guitarist Lance Terror. Recorded at the Outpost in Stoughton and Ray Jeffrey’s mobile Ray of Hope Studios, these 15 speedy little numbers — all under 150 seconds, of course — hit all the classic topics. "From what I remember, they are mostly about love, hate, and pizza," says Lance. Look for a CD-release December 3 at O’Brien’s with the Tampoffs and Lovely Lads. . . . The CHARMS documented much of their 52-date fall tour for a DVD they plan to release in 2006, most likely on Red Car Records. But nothing was more dramatic than the mid-tour line-up change that found fill-in drummer Chris Willett joining the band in Los Angeles after only one rehearsal. The DVD will be directed by Ben Oliver, who helmed the Charms’ "Gimme That Shot" video. In the meantime, their songs are back on television — they were recently optioned for MTV reality shows including Made and My Super Sweet 16.
