Bluetip
POST MORTEM ANTHEM
(DISCHORD)

Stars graphics

Flash may be anathema to all punk rock, but Bluetip’s devotion to the dressed-down æsthetic borders on flatlining. Through three albums the DC quartet have maintained an almost pathological straightforwardness; for a punk guy, frontman Jason Farrell doesn’t even scream with much conviction. Yet Farrell and his earnest troupe have crafted several alluring songs, from jolting rants to sludgy slowdowns; and this newly released collection reveals that they’ve done so all along. Spanning the past six years, the five previously released and five unreleased songs include a cover of the B-52s’ "52 Girls" that sucks off the original’s energy but, like Bluetip themselves, is oddly compelling. On recycled but rare tracks like "Ephadrephine™" and "Haunted House," guitars squeal and rampage in typical Dischord-band fashion, though the tricky rhythms set these numbers apart. The previously unreleased "Spooky" and "Newport" spotlight Bluetip’s poppier side, albeit without any trace of sunshine, or anything that could be considered flash.
