ALL NIGHT
S/T
(TEE PEE)

Like fellow Carolinians the Cherry Valence, Greensboro’s All Night are kicking up some dust in the rock underground with their authentic re-enactment of ’70s-style Southern boogie. On their debut album, the band pay tribute to the sharpshootin’ jams of Skynyrd and the Allmans with a proto-metal ferocity that also recalls Yanks like the James Gang and Grand Funk Railroad.

Frontmen Art and Sanders shout deliriously over each other and occasionally break into harmony, and their reckless guitar duels trade virtuosity for spontaneity. On the punked-up standout "A Little Better," Art promises his woman she’ll do better with him than with her other man while the rhythm section flirts with disaster. "Help Me Out" discovers the missing link between Deep Purple and the Stooges; "Guitars & Wine" is as zonked-out as its title implies. The band know when to slow things down: with its pretty melodies and tender acoustic-guitar backing, the teary-eyed Skynyrd ballad "Say You’re Scared" is a worthwhile respite from the funk. But All Night are primarily interested in coming to your town and helping you party down, like many a great American band before them.

(All Night perform this Monday, January 27, at the Middle East, 480 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square. Call 617-864-EAST.)
