Authority Zero
A PASSAGE IN TIME
(LAVA)

Eight years after they formed in suburban Phoenix, genre-crossing punks Authority Zero finally have their first national release. As the album title suggests, it’s a new recording of old favorites from their days on the local all-ages circuit, with a handful of new songs thrown in.

With the help of star producer Dave Jerden, the band deliver an airtight mix of hardcore, ska, and surf rock that does their home town proud. The first single, "One More Minute," is sunny trip to the oceanside set to a lazy reggae beat that recalls Sublime. The group hit a more consistent stride when they jack up the tempo à la Offspring or Pennywise. And like Pennywise’s Jim Lindberg, frontman Jason DeVore has an ear for melody to match his lightning-speed delivery. On the high-energy slammers "A Passage in Time" and "Lying Awake," the band make room for the occasional ska breakdown, but otherwise they generate a relentlessly hyperactive bounce. DeVore breaks into a warbly falsetto on "Over Seasons," which is an effective foray into Chili Peppers–style poignant pop. But for the most part, Authority Zero are on a mission to deliver swift punk anthems, and they don’t miss a beat on A Passage in Time.

(Authority Zero open for Sum 41 at Avalon on Friday March 7. Call 617-423-NEXT.)
