Oakland’s Drunk Horse first made a name for themselves in the stoner-rock underground with two albums of prime boogie rawk on one of the genre’s most prestigious labels. Man’s Ruin is no more, but frontman Eli Eckert and company are still pumping hard on their first Tee Pee release. Working again with producer and Fucking Champs guitar hero Tim Green, the band walk the fine line between clever and stupid with the same aplomb that recently earned Queens of the Stone Age a gold disc. On the opening " National Lust, " Eckert howls at the ladies like a dog in heat, then trades sweaty guitar licks with ax man John Niles until the women amble his way. The sex-starved vocal hooks on " Lube Job " come from Kiss; the tawdry drug-running tale " Company Man " borrows its bell-bottom blues from Cheap Trick. The group take a Fucking Champs–style turn for the Baroque on " The Bitch Is Bach, " a humorous tribute to a certain " well-tempered man. " And on " One Dollar Records, " they end the album the way all great ’70s-style rockers should: with a righteous sing-along and a monster drum solo.
