Although they’ve been lumped in with classic-rock revivalists and overripe jam-band types, Buffalo’s moe. are an evolving quartet who currently favor mixing Little Feat funk with the instrumental squalls of Apostrophe-era Frank Zappa. Earlier moe. efforts (10 in all) varied considerably in style and substance, as if the band couldn’t decide where to aim their potent instrumental powers and heavy songwriting chops. For Wormwood, moe. recorded rhythm tracks on the road, then dressed them with DJ textures, oddball effects, and happy vocal harmonies. These smoothing studio treatments notwithstanding, the band still boogie, cracking open almost every song with blaring, circuitous guitar solos and gleeful rhythm-section deconstructions. But moe. are not lost in some weedly-weedly ’70s time warp. If you hang long enough with their nutty songs, the sweet soul comes through — ripping solos giving way to catchy choruses, prog-boogie rhythms sustaining mazelike but nonetheless compact arrangements. Whether unplugging for the rumba rock of " Shoot First " or firing the country-fried drum ’n’ bass of " Not Coming Down " (Grateful Dead meets Roni Size?), moe. ply pop with prog — and keep the lesser bands at a hacky-sack distance.
