Case began his career as frontman for the Plimsouls, an elegant muscular rock outfit who emerged from LA’s new-wave scene. Then he turned troubadour. This disc celebrates both his 50th birthday and 20 years as a songwriter-at-large, though it covers his last decade or so of recordings for the respected folk label Vanguard. The tunes range from the delicate urban love story "I Hear Your Voice" to "Wake Up Call," a brand new protest song indicting the corporate criminals who run the Bush administration. And blues, rags, and ballads all get an airing in between. There’s even a live cut that lets us hear Case as he appears most often these days, solo on acoustic guitar with a little attitude borrowed from Dylan and refined through his own rock- and blues-informed singing style. Everything’s beautifully played, too, by a coterie of expert musicians including bassist Jerry Scheff, lap-steeler Greg Leisz, and violinist Lili Haydn. (Peter Case performs tonight, September 30, at Club Passim, 47 Palmer Street in Harvard Square; call 617-492-7679. Tomorrow, October 1, he’s at the Narrows Center for the Arts, 16 Anawan Street in Fall River; call 508-324-1926. And this Saturday, October 2, he plays Café Fantastique, 175 Southbridge Street in Worcester; call 800-768-6267.) BY TED DROZDOWSKI
