Paula Morelenbaum
BERIMBAUM
(UNI)

Poet, musician, playwright, and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes co-wrote such bossa nova standards as "Insensatez," "Garota de Ipanema," "Chega de saudade," and "Amor em paz," and he’s inspired both promising and deluded Brazilian musicians of every sort from the ’60s to present day. Vocalist Paula Morelenbaum brings to his repertoire both ingenuity and respect, her lush, velvety voice and spirited delivery giving every track here an irresistible atmospheric glow. Berimbaum is similar to Bebel Gilberto’s Tanto Tempo but has better production (it shares with Tanto Tempo a bubbly, almost narcotic electronic sheen), compositions, and vocal allure. Co-producing with Bossacucanova, Celso Fonseca, Leo Gandelman, and Andy Pinto, Morelenbaum matches surreal samples with acoustic instruments. But the production never mires de Moraes’s lovely songs nor lessens their mysterious power.
