Singer-songwriter Maria Taylor is half of the Omaha goth-folk duo Azure Ray, whose music is built around the intertwining vocals of Taylor and her partner Orenda Fink. (The pair’s distinctive blend has inspired collaborations with both Bright Eyes and Moby.) On 11:11, Taylor does the typical solo-album thing, sounding a lot like her main gig but taking advantage of the opportunity to indulge a handful of ideas that might not otherwise fly: opener "Leap Year" pulses with electronic beats by Andy LeMaster (of the Athens band Now It’s Overhead); "One for the Shareholder" grinds with post-electroclash synth squelch; and "Xanax" reaches for the spaced-out big-room vibe of mid-period Radiohead. Plenty of Omaha-scene bigwigs appear throughout 11:11 (including Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and producer Mike Mogis), but Fink doesn’t show up to help out her band mate. Of course, she does have her own solo album due next month.
