ACTION ACTION
DONíT CUT YOUR FABRIC TO THIS YEARíS FASHION
VICTORY

The title of this NYC bandís debut is (I hope) a knowing joke: led by singer/guitarist/keyboardist Mark Thomas Kluepfel, Action Action play the sort of self-consciously melodramatic synth-rock thatís all the rage this year ó the stuff the Killers brought to Top 40 radio. Kluepfelís nowhere near the tunesmith head Killer Brandon Flowers is, but heís almost as shameless in his wholesale appropriations of cheesy í80s pop moves, and that gives Donít Cut Your Fabric an enjoyable kick. In "Photograph," he layers Cars keyboard lines over hairspray guitars seemingly lifted from the Def Leppard tune of the same name; in "Drug Like," he canít seem to decide whether he prefers the vocal delivery of Robert Smith or Dave Gahan, so he rips off both. For better and for worse, This Yearís Fashion is nothing but.
