YOUNG JEEZY
LET’S GET IT: THUG MOTIVATION 101
BY CHRIS NELSON

For a novelty song about careless spending and glimmering bling, "Icy" has caused more than its share of trouble. The product of enthusiastic young Atlanta rappers Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy, "Icy" was such a promising hit that the battle over the rights caused a rift between the pair that ended in May with one member of Jeezy’s camp dead and Gucci charged with murder. If you’re wondering how a couple of young scrappers from A-Town could afford such luxuries in the first place, Jeezy’s debut album is the blueprint. Like fellow Georgia slanger T.I., he rhymes almost exclusively about trapping, the crack-dealing lifestyle that led him from the corner to the Escalade. "And Then What" shows the duality of the game — over a feverish "boom boom clap" jacked straight from Queen, Jeezy breathlessly explains how he’s "so dirty, but yet so shiny." And though such a hard-earned come-up could lead to lyrical monotony, Let’s Get It never folds under the weight of Jeezy’s triple beam.
