This LA-based singer-songwriter — the daughter of Little Feat’s Lowell George — made her solo debut with fellow Angeleno Michael Andrews, the well-connected producer/guitarist who composed the score for Donnie Darko, including the hit cover of Tears for Fears’ "Mad World" featuring singer Gary Jules. That’s a lot of men crowding George’s vision, but All Rise doesn’t sound cluttered: George sings in a high, clear voice that floats above the soundscapes, which update the classic folk pop endemic to the LA canyons George grew up in with little sprinkles of buzzing electronics and creamy keyboards (played by Geggy Tah founder Greg Kurstin). Working with Andrews was a wise choice: he gives her best material — opener "Mistress"; the wry, Suzanne Vega–like "Fools in Love" — the same appealing aura of spookiness he brought to Darko. In "Pull Things," over plucked acoustic guitar and the pillowy ooze of a vintage organ, George sings about throwing things in the air; it’s a simple image, but she and Andrews give it wings.
