This is a debut that refuses to present a cohesive image. Instead, the Most Serene Republic do a lot of thematic channeling, from Postal Service vocal phrasing to Shins-y abstract lyrics to balanced atmospherics borrowed from label mates Broken Social Scene. Their ambition is, above all, to look and sound ambitious: lead singer Adrian Jewett is fond of dropping obscure literary references, and the strange sounds that adorn "Underwater Cinematographer" are matched by murky metaphors. Just-bizarre-enough song titles like "Where Cedar Nouns and Adverbs Walk" and the easy segues between quiet harmonic respites and endearingly off-key chordings place the Most Serene Republic exactly where they want to be — right in the middle of the indie-rock map.
