THE BLACK KEYS
THE BLACK KEYS LIVE
FAT POSSUM

When it comes to pure stomp-ass rock, it’s hard to beat the primal thuggery of the Black Keys. Especially since — unlike the other prevailing blues-rooted rock-and-roll duo out there — both guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Pat Carney can play. There’s nothing fancy here in the shooting or the sound; it’s just the Keys on stage tearing through 17 songs in an Australian theater before an adoring crowd. At times their attack is a little relentless, and a better dynamic approach might distinguish their songs more than the fat riffs Auerbach chisels for each one. But it’s a kick watching Carney bludgeon his kit with a tambourine instead of a drumstick and hearing the sloppy grind of "Have Love Will Travel" and "Hard Row" in their muddy glory. The other menu options cover a photo gallery, two videos including the David Cross–directed entry for "10 AM Automatic," and a discography, which is funny, since they only have three albums.
