Gone Phishin'
Phish bids pharewell, plus the Newport Jazz Festival and more
BY CARLY CARIOLI

Even without Lollapalooza to trouble the Tweeter Center, it’s still a hectic festival weekend. First and foremost is the 50th-anniversary edition of the Newport Jazz Festival (401-847-3700) at Fort Adams State Park in Rhode Island. Some of the lead-up preliminaries began this past Wednesday, and Harry Connick Jr. plays the traditional Friday-night kickoff at the Newport Casino. But the fireworks don’t really get started until Saturday, when Fort Adams hosts Dave Brubeck, Dianne Reeves, Branford Marsalis, Jamie Cullum, and Chico Hamilton. Also look for Connick leading a quartet; a heavyweight Coltrane tribute (including McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, and ’Trane’s kid Ravi); and a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie featuring the Jon Faddis Orchestra with guests including Ron Carter and Jackie McLean. (Festival founder George Wein is recovering from abdominal surgery, but we suspect only an appointment with the undertaker could keep him from showing up for his scheduled piano-stage appearance.) On Sunday, Herbie Hancock teams up with Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, and Brian Blade in a quartet; Ornette Coleman returns with his quartet; and Wynton Marsalis leads the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in a salute to Ellington, Monk, and Armstrong, with guests including Gary Burton, James Carter, Regina Carter, Nicholas Payton, and Clark Terry. Also: Bill Cosby conducts; the Mingus Big Band swings; and Peter Cincotti hams it up. Visit www.newportjazz50th.com for full details.

The Newport State Airport (no relation) in Coventry, Vermont, plays host to a very different festival: the two final performances by that state’s shaggy, beloved jam-band superstars Phish. The two-day megafest takes place Saturday and Sunday, and it’s been sold out for months. But you can catch all the action live via satellite on the big screen at the Regal Cinemas theater (508-303-2488) in the Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough, beginning both days at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. The sets are also being simulcast on XM satellite radio; visit www.phish.com for details.

There are probably places in the country where Rick Springfield doesn’t do too well anymore, but suburban Boston isn’t one of them. We expect a hearty Waltham contingent when the man who would steal Jessie’s girl hits North Shore Music Theatre (978-232-7200) in Beverly on Friday the 13th. Elsewhere, the Wellfleet Beachcomber (508-349-6055) on Cape Cod hosts the North Mississippi All Stars tonight (August 12) and Friday and Buffalo Tom on Saturday. The Iron Horse (413-584-0610) in Northampton has brassy cabaret nymph Nellie McKay (for an early show) and breathy Argentinian temptress Juana Molina (for the late show), both on Saturday. And Massachusetts emo-metal kings Killswitch Engage, whose The End of Heartache (Roadrunner) cracked the Billboard Top 30, are at Toad’s Place (203-562-5589) in New Haven on Tuesday.
