Internship Program
The Phoenix Media/Communications Group internship program has been
structured to provide beneficial and educational intern assignments to
qualified and motivated college students, preferably those who could receive
college credit. The Boston Phoenix, Stuff Media Group and
Tele-Publishing, Inc. internships are offered at our Boston offices; WFNX
internships are offered at our Lynn site; and opportunities in editorial,
graphic design, research, finance and sales are offered at our Providence
Phoenix and Worcester Phoenix offices in those cities.
We are currently actively recruiting for spring and summer 2000 internships. Positions
do tend to fill quickly, particularly in the editorial departments, so students
should send resumes in as soon as possible. We require that all interns be
enrolled in classes and must be able to commit 10 hours a week for the summer
and 16 hours a week for fall and spring semesters. All internships are unpaid. Any student interested
in being considered for any of the following internships should send a resume
and cover letter to the address above. Students interested in applying for
editorial internships should also forward copies of writing samples and/or clips
for our review.
The Boston Phoenix
The Boston Phoenix was started in 1966 as a four-page arts and
entertainment alternative news weekly. Today, it is the largest regional
publication of its kind in the country. The Phoenix is nationally known
for its award-winning, incisive journalism and the most comprehensive arts and
entertainment listings of any paper in New England. The Boston Phoenix
offers internships in the following departments:
Editorial Online - Interns assist in the production, maintenance,
and promotion of the editorial content on this Web site. Interns will
assist in weekly page updates, perform online research related
to the newspaper's content, and send out prewritten electronic promotional
materials to other web sites, as well as mailing lists and news groups.
Experience with the World Wide Web, Macintosh, Netscape and e-mail required, as
is an elementary knowledge of HTML. Experience with any of the following is a
plus: Usenet, Filemaker, QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop. One of the two work days
per week must be Tuesday or Wednesday. In addition to mailing a resume to the above address,

Editorial Arts and Entertainment - These interns are responsible
for: photo research and filing, typing manuscripts, transcribing interview
tapes, sending tearsheets to record companies, communicating with bands, record
companies, and publicists, updating database files for "8 Days," updating the
story index, and occasional writing assignments.
Editorial News/Styles - Duties for these interns include: developing
story ideas, assisting staff writers with research, editing short pieces,
photocopying, and filing. Again occasional writing assignment based on story
availability and the ability of the intern to both write and pitch story
ideas.
Editorial Supplements - Interns will work on the monthly
production of both the Phoenix Literary Section (PLS) and One in Ten as well as
other supplements.
Editorial Design - Interns assist the department in the
design and production of the Boston Phoenix. Candidates must know Quark
XPress.
Classified Display - Duties include providing tear sheets to
clients, proofing artwork and line ads, running credit cards of weekly contract
clients, assisting in mailing to existing customers, gathering publications for
prospective clients, and providing input in to the internet site.
Finance - Interns are responsible for doing account analyses and
database work. Other projects may be assigned depending upon the interests and
abilities of the intern.
Graphic Design - These interns will produce ad and promotional
material for the Boston Phoenix. Candidates must know Quark
XPress.
Marketing/Promotions - Interns are responsible for sending out
mailings, carrying out data entry and doing phone work. Also, they assist with
copywriting, proofing, editing, market research, and special projects which
vary for each season.
Management Information Systems (MIS) and Internet - Intern
assignments will include work on the Internet, database management, computer
operations, support, and programming.
Sales/Advertising - Interns write and proof basic form letters,
prepare copy sheets, assist in the creation and deployment of promotional
materials, research new business prospects, maintain and update the database of
clients, and perform general support.
Traffic - Responsibilities include layout of sections, tracking ad
copy, ad filing, answering phones, customer queries, assembling media kits and
client contact.
Internet/New Media - Interns support the web sites for the Boston
Phoenix, WFNX, and others. Ideal candidates will have Perl and Unix
experience, will have completed a data structures course, and will be able to
commit to a two full day per week schedule.
Internet Customer Service - This intern assists the customer
service department by reading mail from customers and reading and/or listening
to personal ads by customers prior to these being posted on the internet.
Candidates should have basic computer skills, but need not have advanced
programming experience.
Stuff Media Group
Stuff Magazine is a highly visual monthly magazine has a long-standing tradition of
providing a unique forum for Boston-area artists, illustrators, designers and
writers capable of producing an interesting page of STUFF. It is a vital and
vibrant lifestyle publication dedicated to exciting and accurate reportage of
the downtown Boston social and artistic scenes.
Stuff @ night's beat is life after 5pm. In other words, nighttown. It
covers food, fashion, clubs, culture, and personalities from the
mainstream to the off-stream. It does for Greater Boston what Details
and Interview magazines once did for Manhattan before they were absorbed
into the cookie-cutter culture of mainstream publications.
Editorial - Interns are in charge of: compiling, organizing, and
writing blurbs about upcoming Calendar listings, proofing copy, contributing to
"Catalysts" and other columns, communicating with vendors and spot checking
distribution points, conducting research for special issues, updating and
maintaining the database, transferring freelance hardcopy onto disk, and
preparing mailings.
Graphic Design - Intern projects include: scanning, designing
ads/editorial, on screen editing/tweaking, paste up mechanical, sending art
back to contributors, filing and organizing. Interns will also have the
opportunity to help out in other areas and thus increase their exposure.
Candidates must know Quark XPress.
Sales - Intern responsibilities include: assisting in developing
and implementing sales and marketing plans, coordinating mailing of deadline
information and media kits, conducting research with regard to advertising
leads, and updating the sales database.
FNX radio network 101.7FNX Boston and 92.1FNX
Portland
FNX is an award-winning alternative radio station that carries a tradition
of providing listeners with the best new music first and the most complete arts
and entertainment information available.
WFNX radio offers internships in the following departments:
Music Department - Interns in this department will assist the
Music Director with all the necessary steps to ensure songs get on the air,
including writing and researching music information, assisting with music
testing, and maintaining the music library.
Marketing/Promotions - Interns in this department are expected to
assist the Marketing/Promotions Manager with all duties including market
research, promotional copywriting, give-aways/contests, and events both in the
office and on-site. Tasks can range from assisting with press relations and
event planning to database maintenance and prize mailings.
On-Air - Interns with an on-air internship assist the DJ's in
virtually every aspect of their show, including taking requests, answering
questions, pulling spots, and writing material for on-air use. In addition,
on-air interns also have the opportunity to learn the WFNX format, how the
on-air studio works, and 4-track production.
Production - Production interns assist the Production Director and
Assistant Production Director in all aspects of production, including dubbing
commercials for reel to cart for airplay, tagging commercials, editing
features, gathering "drops/bites" for image production, and mixing 'FNX music
tapes for special events.
Research - Research interns are expected to help the Research
Manager with all of her duties by tracking station ratings, working on
competitive program analysis, qualitative information, and of course, music
testing. All FNX interns, regardless of their "core" department are
required to work 2 hours per week in the Research Department. However,
Research is also a "core" department and those who choose a full time
internship in this department will have a more in depth look at research than
those who meet the 2 hour requirement.
One in Ten - One in Ten is a news, information, and entertainment
talk program for the gay and lesbian community in and around Boston. The
intern will assist the producer by: contributing ideas and suggestions for One
in Ten topics, making calls to line up potential guests on the show,
researching materials, and assisting with taped production pieces and with some
writing assignments.
Tele-Publishing, Inc.
Tele-Publishing, Inc. is responsible for sales and marketing for over 450
newspapers' classified advertising sections across the U.S., Canada, and the
U.K.

Finance - Interns are responsible for doing account analyses and
database work. Other projects may be assigned depending upon the interests and
abilities of the intern.
Sales - Sales interns' duties will include: comp letters,
forecasting reports, client sales reports and analysis.
Client Services /Marketing - Interns will help organize
marketing campaigns, minute tracking and analysis reports. They will also be
responsible for completing business reviews.
Graphic Design - Interns assist with ROP marketing campaigns for
our clients across the country. Candidates must know Quark XPress.
The Providence Phoenix
Phoenix Media/Communications Group started The Providence Phoenix in
1988. It provides thorough arts-coverage for the greater Providence area, plus
award-winning coverage of local issues and events.
The following internship opportunities are available:
Editorial - Duties for these interns include: developing story
ideas, assisting staff writers with research, editing short pieces,
photocopying, and filing. Again occasional writing assignment based on story
availability and the ability of the intern to both write and pitch story
ideas.
Graphic Design - Intern projects include: scanning, designing ads,

coverage of local issues and events.
