Interview: John Oliver

When you see all the crazies that populate this country, are you ever tempted to just turn tail and head back home?
You have clearly never seen the homegrown hooligans that we have. Try walking past any pub in England that has a football game on, and you will be running back to your lunatics with open arms before the first beer bottle whizzes past your head.

Anger over Scotland's decision to release Pan-Am 103 bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi has prompted a call for Americans to boycott Scottish products — including whisky! Do you agree with such a drastic form of protest?
The main Scottish exports are haggis, deep fried pizza and Susan Boyle. You should be boycotting them for your own good anyway.

Excellent British comedy —The Mighty Boosh,Look Around You,Garth Marenghi's Darkplace,The IT Crowd — seems to be catching on stateside in a big way lately (with cult audiences, at least). What do you suppose took us thick Americans so long?
You're being too hard on yourself. Better late than never. Both Seinfeld and Larry Sanders failed to catch on in the UK, and they are two of the greatest comedies ever made.

On BBC America, you encourage viewers to use closed captioning since the programs contain accents "which you would hear much more if you didn't throw our tea in the Boston Harbor." Beside me speaking more like you, what do you supposed the world would look like today if the Minutemen and the Redcoats hadn't gone at it 233 years ago?
I can't answer that question. It's just too painful. It's like asking me what would my life would have been like if my first girlfriend hadn't broken my heart in pieces. You might not have been our first girlfriend, or indeed our only girlfriend at the time, but that doesn't mean that we didn't care for you, or that we wouldn't take you back in a heartbeat if you'd just come to your senses.

Anyway, sorry about that whole Tea Party thing. But I'm hoping don't hold it against us and still enjoy coming to Boston. What do you — or do you not — enjoy about our humble city?
Apology not accepted. But thank you anyway. I love coming to Boston — I love trying to suppress my natural desire to order you people around
