In recent decades, books about rock and roll have undergone an evolution. As the rock fan skews older, her standards surpass the glossy, ghostwritten memoirs and purple hagiographies of yore. In their stead, rock books have become expertly written accounts of decadence(Please Kill Me,The Dirt), broad musings on the cultural significance of rock and roll (Our Band Could Be Your Life), and idiosyncratic first-person accounts written by rockers themselves. The latter two are especially prevalent in indie rock, a genre symbiotic with the college campus; the Boston Book Festival has organized a number of these authors for its final event. Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses got an ace review in the New York Times' Sunday Book Review for her recent memoir, Rat Girl. Ditto Black Postcards, the less-recent memoir from Dean Wareham — veteran of Galaxie 500 and Luna, and current member of Dean and Britta. Joe Pernice is the Renaissance man of the bunch, having released a novella, Meat is Murder, in response to the Smiths' record Meat is Murder. Rounding out the event are Steve Almond and Nick Flynn, two writers who have written memoirs in the spirit of rock and roll, and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, slated to play ambient guitar over a slideshow of his photos.
