Review: Dream House

Haunted house chills and mind games

You'd have to be crazy to quit your job in the depths of the recession, but that's just what New York publishing exec Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) does in Dream House, planning to write that novel and spend more time with his wife (Rachel Weisz) and kids in their new house in Connecticut. But no one warned them that five years ago the previous tenant went all Shining and killed his wife and kids, and is now out of the psych ward and on the prowl — or that they have a coven of goth kids in their basement. And why does that woman across the street (Naomi Watts) look so concerned? All of this will be explained, as the film abruptly shifts midway from half-hearted haunted-house chills to sub-Hitchcock mind games. Craig's steely commitment to every plot development, no matter how preposterous, is commendable. Director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot) seems to have washed his hands of this mess, as have off-screen couple Craig and Weisz, whose undeniable chemistry at least offers tabloid thrills.
