Review: The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye

Marie Losier's first feature

An awkwardly hybridized love story and concert doc, Marie Losier's first feature gives us not one but two narratives on industrial music daemon Genesis P-Orridge. Unfortunately, the director's freewheeling insincerity guts both. The real-life romance between the fearsome Throbbing Gristle frontman and his late lover and collaborator Lady Jaye is mostly culled from home video footage of dinner parties and lazy afternoons, with only the occasional foray into the couple's more interesting "pandrogyne" project, wherein P-Orridge and Jaye went under the knife to "become" the same person. Fascinating stuff, but Losier doesn't focus on the humanity of P-Orridge and Jaye's unique experience. Instead, she misuses footage of P-Orridge's haunted shows, which she cuts to as if hoping her harebrained project will open itself up. The blasé result feels like a great disservice to P-Orridge, who conducts himself with genuine grace.
