Haven

A lot of fuss without any payoff

Orlando Bloom in Haven

Orlando Bloom executive-produced this crime thriller set in the Grand Caymans back in 2004; it got a look at the Toronto Film Festival that year and has been sitting on the shelf ever since — with good reason. The divergent story lines about an American money launderer (Bill Paxton) and an interracial Romeo and Juliet (Bloom and Zoë Saldana) play out with few connections except for the same pack of hoods licking their chops on the periphery. Politics of race and, in light of the Natalie Holloway case, the lax security in a Caribbean paradise provide interest, but the jumpy non-linear narrative and the lack of resolution make for a lot of fuss without any payoff. Anthony Mackie and Stephen Dillane give solid supporting performances as the bristling gangster wanna-be and the shady offshore banker; first-time director Frank E. Flowers has a lot of energy but can’t get the pieces to fall.
