And then on Wednesday, we get They Shoot Horses, Don’t They (1969), a new 35mm print of Sydney Pollack’s half heavy-handed, half enormously powerful adaptation of Horace McCoy’s hard-boiled Depression-era novel. The movie also is set in the 1930s, and it chronicles a month-long competition in which couples move round and round a dance floor, 24 hours a day with short breaks, till only one survivor is left to win a cash prize. Among the desperate hoofers: Jane Fonda as a hard-bitten, suicidal dame.
