VIDEO: The trailer for Push
Teens with special powers? A government conspiracy? Heroes comes to mind, but Paul McGuigan reaches much farther (the Vulcan mind meld?) to add drama to Push, yet another entry in the superhuman sweepstakes.
Dakota Fanning plays a clairvoyant watcher who recruits a reluctant mover (Chris Evans) to help her recover a syringe full of power-boosting goo. In hot pursuit is the Division, a shadowy organization led by Djimon Hounsou (pick an accent!), and an Asian gang straight from the Shanghai stage version of West Side Story.
The bad guys freely use their powers of telepathy, psychometry, and telekinesis; the good guys, being American teens with complicated issues, struggle to harness theirs. I'd have laughed if I hadn't been yawning. It's never revealed why the action unfolds in the kitschy back alleys of Hong Kong (international box office?), but it is clear that the sequel is headed to America. At least the exploding fish tanks are entertaining.
