Then there's AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE (2010; March 26 at 7:30 pm; April 1 at 7:15 pm), which traces the art of exploitative sleaze back to 1913's silent white-slavery film Traffic in Souls and Kroger Babb's lurid sex-ed films. From there, it follows the trail of gore all the way to 2009's Black Dynamite, fondly zooming in on such notorious flicks as Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left and Herschell Gordon Lewis's Blood Feast. This stroll through the hucksterism of yesteryear keeps its narrative simple — all the better to showcase the storytelling of its massive collection of talking heads (who include Animal House director and raconteur extraordinaire John Landis). Director Elijah Drenner does his documentary a favor just by knowing when to get out of his subjects' way and let them spin schlock into gold.

Editor's Note: In a previous version of this article the Boston Underground Film Festival was reported as being in its seventh year, but the film festival has been in existence since 1998. The mention has been deleted from above.
