Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  June 15, 2010

First off, a huge THANK YOU goes out to all the bands and fans who attended our inaugural Best Music Poll Awards Show last week, and congrats to all the winners (and a shoutout to those boneless buffalo tenders from Wings Over Providence). Damn right we’ll do it again next year.

And speaking of BMP victors, last call for punk champs THE JESSE MINUTE at Firehouse 13 on THURSDAY (the 17th) before they embark on a Midwest tour. NINJESSA, TIMESUP!, and ‘09 BMP winner HANK SINATRA JR. open; all ages and $7 at the door (401.270.1801). STARTING OVER TUESDAY and THE COMING WEAK (pick up TCW’s latest, Are We All Letting Go) are among the five opening bands for Boston pop-core act Vanna at Lupo’s (401.272.5876) on FRIDAY (the 18th); $15 at the door, music starts at 8 pm sharp. Also on Friday, BMP Best Male Vocalist MARK CUTLER (his new album Red = a great Dad’s Day gift), leads the TINY STRING BAND to the Greenwich Hotel on Main Street; always 21+ and never a cover, call 401.884.4200. On SATURDAY (the 19th) Tommy’s Place downtown presents a memorial fundraiser ($5 at the door) with alt-rock locals BAYLOCK, INNOCENT UPRISING, and ARMY OF ROBOTS, call 401.272.4980 for more. A few blocks over at Tazza Caffe, BECKY CHACE headlines with THE SILKS and SIT DOWN BABY, $5 at the door (401.421.3300). Next THURSDAY (the 24th), Club Hell will host an all-ages early-bird throwdown led by A FAYLENE SKY, with JUNE AND THE OCEAN, SHE’S A ROBOT, and FOREVER THE FALLEN. Doors at 6 pm, call 401.709.3923.

A heads-up for a fundraiser at Nick-A-Nee’s on SATURDAY (the 26th) benefiting our canine/feline/assorted critter pals at the Providence Animal Rescue League. “PINTS FOR PAWS” kicks off at 3 pm, with plenty of fun for the kids, live music starting at 6 pm, and our Rudy Cheeks woofing it up as guest host. Donation is $5, call 401.861.7290.
