Guest lists 2010: Phoenix critics weigh in on the year in music

What consensus?
By PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  December 21, 2010

LISTED: Crystal Castles made a few of our critics' lists - with some help from a (legendary) friend.

If there is any indication of how schizophrenic 2010 was when it came to music, look no further than the Boston Phoenix critic’s picks. Never mind sharing a common Number 1 -- few artists overlapped at all throughout each writer’s Top 10, proving that while music in 2010 lacks a common denominator, it has perhaps never been this fertile. So while we over the past few months we were treated to cute novelty items as the “Double Rainbow” song and Sleigh Bells, geriatric indie wash-ups like Arcade Fire and Kings of Leon, and Cee-Lo’s facepalm of rebellion dubbed “Fuck You,” none of that nonsense elbowed its way into our year-ends picks (though we are alarmed that a fair share of Die Antwoord has spring back up from its July grave). Here are the jams, albums and mixes that got our writers through 2010:

  • Beyond Dilla and Dipset
With a semi-sober face I'll claim that hip-hop in 2010 might deliver more than just posthumous Dilla discs, Dipset mixtapes, and a new ignoramus coke rapper whom critics pretend rhymes in triple-entendres.
  • Fall National Pop Preview: The golden age
Okay, so the album is dead, the music industry is dead, rock is dead, and the Library of Alexandria you have stored on your C drive has killed 150 years of recorded music culture.
  • The Big Hurt: Kanye leaks!
Brit copper busted, Kanye leaking, Bieber fuming, Tity Boi the tits
