A few weeks ago in our Metal Issue, we posited that there’ll never be another Big Four in metal because the genre has splintered into a hundred various micro-scenes, all drawing from the same foundation but now unrecognizable as part of the original template. In a way, the national popular music landscape has done the same thing, and local music followed suit to an even greater degree. If asked to name the biggest band out of Boston right now you’d probably find it difficult, if not impossible, to come up with an answer. Instead, we have armies of musicians and performers honing their discrete crafts in clubs and other venues across Boston, Somerville, and Cambridge, and though it doesn’t add up into one unified “Boston sound,” it does create — for better or worse — a diverse, rhythmic pulse within the city. THE PROSELYTE | September 22 @ O’Brien’s Pub | Cambridge stoner-metal quartet the Proseltye return by dropping the sludge gauntlet on Sunshine (Teenage Disco Bloodbath Records). We got a taste of the lush new riffage when the Proselyte last month contributed the bomb-heavy “Thirty Thousand Feet of Shark” to the Phoenix Born of Fire Vol. 1 metal compilation, and the melodic sonic beatdown continues here on Sunshine.
