ROCK AND ROLL'S PAST: Bruce Springsteen
Springsteen had been barnstorming Boston for several years — he’d already played Cambridge clubs twice in 1974 — when he hit town in May to open for Bonnie Raitt in a show at the Harvard Square Theatre. There were two complete shows that night, the second attended by Jon Landau, which prompted his words in the Real Paper: “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” It was the last paragraph in a rambling personal essay, but it ran as a banner in a Springsteen ad in the July 18 Rolling Stone. The rest, as they say, is history.
