Joe Nice returns; Pandai’a steps out
By SUSANNA BOLLE | June 17, 2008
Every month for the past year, the folks at BASSIC — a night devoted to the woofer-wobbling sounds of dubstep — have been shaking the bassbins proper downtown at the Good Life. The sound system is solid and — flying in the face of the genre's reputation for po’-faced seriousness — the crowd is enthusiastic. Bassic has hosted some of the finest names in the genre, from dubstep’s birthplace in the UK (CASPA and HEADHUNTER have both headlined) and from the US. But it's also helped to cultivate a scene that has been cracking foundations closer to home.
When asked to name his favorite moment at Bassic, DJ DABU (Dan D’Aloisio), from the stable of resident DJs, answers: “Most definitely the Halloween Masquerade with JOE NICE.” The show that night was indeed an incendiary one, with a packed house in full costume and a blistering set from Nice, the founder of the most influential dubstep night in the US, NYC’s Dub War. It’s only fitting that they’re bringing him back for an encore this Wednesday, when Bassic celebrates its first birthday.
As for what’s in store as Bassic heads into year two, after a July edition featuring HATCHA (a true UK legend), D’Aloisio says he’d like to focus on the innovative dubstep DJs and producers who have cropped up in cities around the US. And, of course, to continue to foster the homegrown scene that’s flourishing at nights like DUBWISE and OPERATION UNDERGROUND.
And if you just can’t wait for Wednesday to get a taste of dubstep, check out Monday’s installment of BEAT RESEARCH, where Bassic resident DJ PANDAI'A will be pushing the limits of low end over at Enormous Room.
