While quickly rifling through the Arts section of the December 2 New York Times, your superior correspondents noted a photograph of old friend, Jaimy Gordon. J. excitedly shouted to P., "Hey it looks like the Times is reviewing Jaimy Gordon's new book." So we turned back to the first Arts page and read the first sentence of the review: "When Jaimy Gordon won the National Book Award for fiction last month . . ." We stopped there and screamed with delight.

Jaimy lived in Providence through most of the '70s. She taught at Brown, worked with the RI Council on the Arts, and occasionally played on the softball team for the legendary Leo's bar. For many of those years, she lived on the third floor of a tenement on Olney Street (Jorge lived on the first floor). She already had a novel under her belt, Shamp of the City-Solo, a wild and magical book. She wins the NBA for fiction for her latest novel, Lord of Misrule. Her voice is unique and inimitable. She deserves this.
