A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

As a member of the LGBT community for the past 45 years I can tell you that marriage equality (see "Yes On One? Duh," by Deirdre Fulton, September 14) is not on the front burner for most of the people I know in my community. I think it's more of a tactical smokescreen by the right-wing nuts to bridge the apathy gap by injecting fear into the election, getting frightened morons into a voting booth and while they are there to check all the conservative boxes so they can defeat Democrats, and more so Progressive Ideals.

I propose this instead. Let's make a marriage license like a dog license. Mandatory renewal every couple of years with proof of up to date vaccinations. The trillions of dollars raised could be used lessen our taxes and erase the deficit.

THUMBS UP TO LANCE

Many thanks for the very fine work Lance Tapley has done on the East-West Highway in his two key stories (see "What's Driving the East-West Highway," May 4, and "Nails in the Coffin," September 7). What Lance brought to this coverage one never sees anymore in journalism and that is a deep long-term immersion in the subject he is writing about and the ability to tell a complex story in a simple accessible way. Very impressive. Very effective.
