A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL
As a member of the LGBT community for the past 45 years I can tell you that marriage equality (see "Yes On One? Duh," by Deirdre Fulton, September 14) is not on the front burner for most of the people I know in my community. I think it's more of a tactical smokescreen by the right-wing nuts to bridge the apathy gap by injecting fear into the election, getting frightened morons into a voting booth and while they are there to check all the conservative boxes so they can defeat Democrats, and more so Progressive Ideals.
I propose this instead. Let's make a marriage license like a dog license. Mandatory renewal every couple of years with proof of up to date vaccinations. The trillions of dollars raised could be used lessen our taxes and erase the deficit.

THUMBS UP TO LANCE
Many thanks for the very fine work Lance Tapley has done on the East-West Highway in his two key stories (see "What's Driving the East-West Highway," May 4, and "Nails in the Coffin," September 7). What Lance brought to this coverage one never sees anymore in journalism and that is a deep long-term immersion in the subject he is writing about and the ability to tell a complex story in a simple accessible way. Very impressive. Very effective.

Lance Tapley's assessment of environmental protection efforts during the 125th Legislature (see "'Holding the Line,'" May 25) gives due credit to some like Senator Tom Saviello, but ignores integral efforts of important others.
- 15 reasons the East-West Highway will never be built (plus a political bonus!)
This past spring, out of the blue, Republican Governor Paul LePage and the GOP-controlled Maine Legislature funded a $300,000 study by the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) of the feasibility of a corporate-owned, toll superhighway across the middle of the state.
- Peter Vigue: listen closely
In May when I asked Peter Vigue at the County Commissioner's meeting in Dover-Foxcroft about the potential for a tar sands oil pipeline in the proposed East-West Corridor (see "Tar Sands Disaster," by Deirdre Fulton, August 17) he dismissed the question.
- What’s driving the East-West Highway?
Eminent domain! The government's ability to seize land for a public purpose strikes terror into the hearts of many landowners.

It was nine months before their wedding that my friends Vissy and Harry sat me down for a “We need to talk” moment. What they wanted was a favor: would I be willing to get ordained as a minister and officiate their wedding?

- Providence's mayoral candidates, on bended knee
In a parallel universe, where serial candidate Christopher Young's antics are simply an ingenious bit of performance art — and not evidence of a worrisome and often obnoxious instability — his display at the recent Providence mayoral debate might qualify as a sort of capstone on a brilliant career.
- Review: A riveting Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Edward Albee’s brilliant, savage first full-length play, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? , needs to be done marvelously or not at all. So, thank goodness this Perishable Theatre production is a marvel indeed.
- Trinity's rollicking Absurd Person Singular
Very strange. It's as though British playwright Alan Ayckbourn had come to Trinity Rep, studied its veteran acting company, laughed heartily at the amusing talent on display, then went home and wrote Absurd Person Singular for six of the actors.
- Trinity's Absurd Person Singular
As playwriting goes, there's prolific and then there's prolific. There's, say, Shakespeare with his piddling 38 plays. And then there's someone like Alan Ayckbourn: 73 full-length babies, and counting.
