J Hogue

Name?
J Hogue

Distinction?
Designer and owner, Highchair designhaus, and ad hoc historian (via artinruins.com).

Where do you live?
Downtown Pawtucket.

Favorite Web site?
As a distraction, the comix Web site — xkcd.com.

What do you drive?
Chrysler Le Baron, circa ’92.

What are/were your favorite endangered properties and why?
They were the Trolleybarn on Cranston Street the Gulf Station on Broadway, and the Produce Warehouse, but they all have been demolished. Currently endangered properties are fewer these days — for good and bad reasons — but I love the Cranston Street Armory, and a lot of the buildings in Downtown Pawtucket are ripe for affordable redevelopment.

What have you been listening to lately?
A lot of Atmosphere (Minnesota hip-hop) and getting back to my old-school punk.

Favorite thing about Rhode Island?
You rarely get asked what your day job is.

Least favorite thing about Rhode Island?
Political wrangling.

The three things that would make life better here?
1) To be the first state in the union to have universal health-care; 2) when Narragansett Beer is brewed in RI; 3) keep historical tax credits!

Favorite drink?
Kafe Lila’s Americano (espresso + h2o).

Secret crush?
What are you talking about, I don't have any secrets.

Favorite candy bar?
Frozen Snickers bar.

Best book you’ve read recently?
How Buildings Learn: What Happens After They’re Built, by Stewart Brand.

What do you see in the future of downtown Pawtucket?
I see nothing but potential; the Bucket’s the new West Side.

What do you like to do for vacation?
Detach and unplug.

Favorite breakfast spot?
Rosa’s Kitchen in Pawtucket for cheap-ass takeout, and Nick’s on Broadway for the fancy specials.

If you could have five historical figures over for dinner, whom would you choose?
Dr. Seuss, David Bowie, Mike Watt, Zuzana Licko, and Julia Child. That’d be quite a night.
