Bad education
Isn’t David S. Bernstein aware that Anthony Braga and associates who are now criticizing City Hall for being complacent toward crime are the same folks who persuaded Mayor Menino’s inner circle to ease off arresting and imprisoning youth gang members? (See “
Does Boston Hate the BPD?”, “Talking Politics,” July 18.)

Because the criminologists convinced policy makers that inter-gang violence would be significantly reduced by manipulating the behavior of gang members, Boston has spent millions to underwrite ministerial alliances and hired hundreds of counselors and street workers.

To top things off, scores of talented police officers and detectives were diverted from investigating crimes and reassigned to pacifying rival gangs. All these efforts have failed miserably, for homicides continue to soar and criminal activity has not abated.

So when Menino says it wasn’t he that dropped the ball, but maybe the academics who did, he may have felt embarrassed for taking their advice, but he speaks the truth loud and clear.
