We may also see the entry of city officials, most of whom just ran in 2009 and don't have to give up their seats to run. If Steve Baddour's State Senate seat opens up, for example, one insider predicts a battle to replace him between the mayors of Haverhill and Methuen: Jim Fiorentini and Jim Manzi.

Here in Boston, there are rumors that City Councilor Stephen Murphy might run for auditor or treasurer, or that Councilor John Connolly might run for his father's old office, secretary of the commonwealth. (Connolly emphatically denies that last rumor, by the way.)

Not everybody will be running for another office this year. But enough of them will that voters shouldn't have reason to complain they have no real choices to make at the ballot box in 2010.
