FRIDAY, JULY 1 AT THE CLUBS INDIE. We don’t have room for another dance-punk record in our trash bin and neither do you, so let’s just agree not to call Shy Child anything of the sort. Anyway, Nate Smith and Pete Cafarella used up all that shit in their other band (the Touch and Go/Dischord indie-electro-funk collective Supersystem/El Guapo), and Shy Child’s One with the Sun sticks to party jams: opener "The Noise Won’t Stop" sounds like last summer’s Nina Sky jawn transcribed for live drums and vintage synths, "Shinshine" jacks a chant from Franky Beverly and Maze, and in electro-house mode the Children fuse the endless horizons of the DFA with the low-tech bombast of DFA1979. They’re at the Paradise Lounge, 969 Comm Ave, Boston | 9 pm | $8 | 617.562.8814. JAZZ. Singer Lizz Wright debuted in 2003 with Salt (Verve), which showcased her phenomenal range, control, and power — but it’s hers new Dreaming Wide Awake (Verve) that’s got folk-soul fans from No Depression to NPR getting all Tom Cruise about her. The new disc shows she’s got taste to match her skills, mixing jazz and R&B in covers (Joe Henry, Ella Jenkins) and originals (including a couple written with Norah enabler Jesse Harris). She’s at Scullers, in the DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel, 400 Soldiers Field Road (at the Mass Pike), Allston | 617.547.6211. METAL. In the 1980s, the California thrash band Hirax were but a footnote: among the legions of bands signed to Metal Blade who never got anywhere near as big as Metallica, they entered the metal-trivia lexicon by crossing paths with original ’tallica bassist Ron McGovney and employing a black frontman. As they’ve reminded us since getting back together in 2000, their lack of fame wasn’t for lack of speed, density, or tough-ass-looking spiked wristbands. With Municipal Waste, Coliseum, and Defcon 4 | Middle East, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge | $12 | 617.864.EAST. DJ. At a time when Internet insta-buzz and mixtape hype can make anyone a superstar DJ overnight, Caps + Jones are still New York City’s best-kept secret. Their mixes (including their recent Moving in Stereo) employ ultra-quick edits and a ridiculously broad range of influences, but to call the style "kitchen sink" would be to discount the obvious attention that goes into each selection. And it’s no different live — call it "forward-thinking party music" if you must, but know that while you’re chatting about it, valuable ass-shaking time is slipping away. Three bucks won’t get you a pretzel at a Madonna, Slim Thug, or David Bowie show, but tonight it’ll get you into Enormous Room to hear all three. With the unstoppable indie-crunk blends of Certified Bananas’ P. Nice and the Audiovandal | 567 Mass Ave, Cambridge | 617.491.5550. That’s the sub–Cliffs Notes summary of Dirty Projectors’ post–September 11, chamber-pop "glitch-opera" The Getty Address, though lone Projector Dave Longstreth probably wouldn’t recognize it. Written for chorus, strings, and winds, atomized on a laptop, then sung like a folk song, Getty is a way-semiotic concept album that’s (thankfully) far easier to enjoy than to get your head around. Longstreth presents it with accompanying (dirty?) video projections at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline | midnight | 617.734.2501. At the Ted Shawn Theatre, the famed corps founded by the late Martha Graham — whom many consider the mother of the modern-dance form — performs a retrospective of her choreographed works, among them the solo piece Lamentation and Errand into the Maze, a collaboration with Isamu Noguchi (he designed the set). For tickets ($55) and further information, visit www.jacobspillow.org, or call 413.243.0745. | Gnossienne, El Penitente, Errand into the Maze, and Acts of Light | Tonight at 8 pm, tomorrow at 2 + 8 pm, Sun 2 pm | Jacob’s Pillow, Ted Shawn Theatre, George Carter Rd, Becket | $49.50-$55 | 413.243.0745 Meanwhile, the Doris Duke Studio Theatre hosts avant-garde Australian collective Chunky Move as they perform Tense Dave, a literally dizzying pomo combo of dance and theater that takes place on a revolving stage. Check it out tonight or tomorrow night at 8:15 (or opt for a weekend matinee); for tickets ($20), call or visit the Pillow's Web site. Tense Dave | Tonight at 8:15 pm, tomorrow at 2:15 + 8:15 pm, Sun 5 pm | Jacob’s Pillow, Doris Duke Studio Theatre, George Carter Rd, Becket | $18-$20 | 413.243.0745 DINING & WINING Chris Douglass says he just might play the number 27 on his next lottery ticket. The chef/owner of Icarus (3 Appleton Street, Boston) has reason to favor the number: the restaurant celebrates its 27th birthday this month, and was also rated 27 (out of 30) for food in the 2005 Zagat Survey. What better way to recognize both achievements than with a three-course prix fixe dinner menu, served during the first 27 days of July for — what else? — $27. Call 617.426.1790 for reservations and information. EVENTS BOSTON HARBORFEST with tours + performances + re-enactments + concerts + cruises + more | Through Mon. | throughout Boston | 617.227.1528 or www.bostonharborfest.com COPLEY SQUARE FARMERS’ MARKET | Today + Tues 11 am-6 pm | Copley Square, along St. James Ave, Boston | Free | 781.893.8222 AT THE MOVIES Are we nuts to think you’d ever waste a Friday night in a museum auditorium, watching a subtitled documentary about the writing process of an old French lady? Maybe. But what if that prim-and-proper lady were Dominique Aury, the noted book editor and Legion of Honor awardee who confessed in 1994, at the age of 86, to penning one of the best-selling works of S&M erotica of all time, Story of O, under the pseudonym Pauline Réage? And what if the documentary, Writer of O, directed by Pola Rapaport, examined the love affairs and personal demons that led her to write the novel — through both interviews and dramatic recreations? See, we’re not so crazy — just a little hot and bothered. Catch it at the Museum of Fine Arts (465 Huntington Avenue, Boston) at 8 p.m.; for information on tickets and other show times, visit www.mfa.org or call the Remis Box Office at 617.369.3306. Every year the Harvard Film Archive shares its collection of classic and esoteric films. This year’s "Summer Double Features" starts out with King Vidor’s humanist masterpiece Our Daily Bread (1934), in which a couple leave the Depression-racked city to found a collective farm, and the cynical Cynara (1932), in which Ronald Colman plays a married London barrister whose casual flirtation leads to something uglier. The HFA is in the Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St, Cambridge | Our Daily Bread Tonight at 7 pm + Sunday at 8:30 pm; Cynara Tonight at 8:30 pm + Sunday at 7 pm | 617.495.4700. OPENING THIS WEEKEND: You might say Yes to Sally Potter’s new film starring Joan Allen as an American scientist who has an affair with a Lebanese surgeon, even though much of the dialogue is in rhyming couplets. If your answer is no, however, you could consider on the Rebound Steve Carr’s comedy about a big-time college coach (Martin Lawrence) demoted to the JVs after making a scene. Of course, between Me and You and Everyone We Know, that has the look of a formula film, so maybe we should opt for this quirky romantic comedy by first-time director Miranda July about a divorced shoe salesman and a flaky performance artist that was a prize winner this year at Cannes. Otherwise, we can follow La marche de l’Empereur/March of the Penguins to Antarctica in this Luc Jacquet documentary that’s narrated by Morgan Freeman. Or head to South Central LA for Rize, David LaChapelle’s documentary look at the neighborhood’s street-dance scene. For more movies and showtimes, see our Movie Theater directory. READINGS & LECTURES SONIA SANCHEZ + D.A. Donald Margulies’s Pulitzer-winning Dinner with Friends explores the ripples in a long-time marriage when the couple’s best friends break up. Directed by Elliot Norton Award winner Scott Edmiston for Gloucester Stage Company, it’ll run through July 17 at 267 East Main St, Gloucester | $30, $20 for seniors and students | 978.281.4433. The outdoor Publick Theatre opens its 35th season with not the usual Shakespeare but another elegant British wordsmith, as Diego Arciniegas directs Tom Stoppard’s dazzling Arcadia, which is set at a British country house in the early 19th century and the present and treats of history, philosophy, romance, literary sleuthing, and landscape architecture. The Publick is at 1400 Soldiers Field Rd, Brighton | Tonight–September 4 (in repertory) | $30, $25 seniors + students | 617.782.5425. You could just do Hello, Dolly! Or you could make Louis Armstrong the star attraction. That’s what happens at Cape Playhouse, where three-time Tony nominee Andre De Shields stars in a new musical he wrote with James Mirrione. Called Ambassador Satch — The Life and Music of Louis Armstrong, it continues through tomorrow. The Cape is at 820 Main Street, Route 6A, in Dennis, and tickets are $25 to $45; call (877) 385-3911, or visit www.capeplayhouse.com Billed as "a psychological thriller from the Front Lines," Pugilist Special won Best Fringe First at the 2003 Edinburgh Festival. Now Adriano Shaplin’s play, which is about a female explosives expert assigned to a team of Marines aiming to take out an Arab despot called "The Bearded Lady," makes its New England debut at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, next to the Town Pier in Wellfleet |Through July 16 | $19-$25, $12 student rush | 508.349.WHAT or www.what.org Franz Kafka never made it to the USA, but that didn’t stop him exploring us from the New York harbor to an Oklahoma of which Rodgers and Hammerstein never dreamed.
