AS THE GLOBE TURNS
Who’s got the beat on the Big Dig?

BY DAN KENNEDY

Tom Palmer, who’s been the Boston Globe’s Big Dig reporter for nearly a decade, is getting a new assignment. "Although I didn’t ask for a change, nine years of covering the Big Dig is enough, and I’m moving on to cover development in Boston," he says. "I followed the project from $6 billion to $14 billion, and someone else can take it on up."

Deputy managing editor Peter Canellos says that Raphael Lewis, who’s already covering transportation, will take on the Big Dig — and may also handle the Sunday "Stops and Starts" column, though no final decision has been made. Canellos adds that the move is likely to be the first of perhaps three or four beat shifts aimed at "getting fresh eyes on long-running stories."

Of Palmer, Canellos says that "the development beat is a natural move for Tom, and something that’s very important to Marty." That, of course, would be editor Marty Baron.
