DEPT. OF UNWITTING SELF-PARODY
‘Rethinking Fatness’
— A brown-bag lunch featuring Professor Katie LeBesco, Marymount Manhattan College, Department of Communication Arts "In the midst of our present ‘obesity epidemic,’ fatness is pathologized and fat people are demonized. LeBesco will examine cultural moments in which people actively resist over determined, totalizing constructions of fatness, in favor of a more complicated understanding of the relationship of fatness to health, beauty, and nature. She will discuss the way that fat bodies in the United States are marked as ‘failed citizens,’ explore the political implications of fashions for ‘fat(ter) women,’ analyze popular culture depictions of fatness as a disability, and explore the use of the Internet in offering alternative narratives through the disembodiment of discourse. She also will evaluate the strategies and tactics that are currently popular in fat activism."
