The Abbey Lounge takes a break

The Abbey Lounge is closed. But before you choke on your PBR, take a deep breath and relax. It’s just for a bit. On Tuesday, it was announced that the city of Somerville asked the redoubtable punk-garage dive to close, effective immediately, until it’s up to snuff on fire codes. According to Dents bassist and Abbey fixture Michelle Paulhus, a tentative reopening is scheduled for November 2. "It’s not that bad," she says. "We don’t have to build doorways or take down walls or anything like that. We have to get an electrician in there to do certain things like outlets and stuff." "We’re gonna try to get it open for next Friday," says co-owner Jay Grimaldi. "We have all the sprinklers in place. It’s just more minor stuff. I think what happened with the Station fire has really trickled down, and all the inspectors are really making sure that everything’s in compliance." In the meantime, the Abbey’s next-door neighbor Z Wine Bar will remain open, hosting acts scheduled for the club’s pub stage, and bookers will attempt to reschedule main-stage acts. One gig they’re hoping not to bump is the Halloween blowout featuring the Lyres, the Coffin Lids, and the Konks scheduled for October 29. Says Grimaldi: "We’re gonna be getting right to it this weekend to try to button it up for next week." For updates, stay tuned to On The Download.
