Get a leg up
Leg warmers are back — can you stand it?
BY KATE COHEN

It’s time to dust off that old VHS tape of Footloose and revisit the opening credits — because believe it or not, leg warmers are making a comeback. So let’s do a quick review on how to cultivate their slouchy chic: wear them bunched up over a pair of well-worn sneakers for that "I just got back from my Fame audition" look, or spice things up with slinky stilettos and fishnets. They go with miniskirts, tights, and — dare we even say it? — spandex short pants. (Fortunately, dancing along to "Let’s Hear It for the Boy" is optional.)

Still a staple of retro cool, Urban Outfitters has two-tone-flecked leg warmers in black, brown, and maroon ($16), and cotton/rayon cable knit in black ($16). Its in-store stock has been flying off the shelves, but you can also visit its Web site and find an acrylic boot-cut style in black ($22), a thick, red-striped pair ($28), and black cotton ($18). Urban Outfitters also sells striped, solid, and sparkle acrylic arm warmers ($12) to complete the look.

Newbury Street’s Ozone has Paul Frank’s spin on the trend; his red-and-black-striped leg warmers ($19) would fit in well in a punk-rock sock drawer. A few doors away, Allston Beat is also down with bringing leg warmers back. Its acrylic pairs in gray and black are sold as warmers for the legs or arms ($22). H&M sells a comparatively softer style; its knit pink pair ($4.50) recalls grandma’s sweater rather than CBGB.

Over in Cambridge, the Garment District has new pairs (not vintage) in brown, navy blue, black, off-white, green, and red ($5), and Hootenanny offers a baby-blue set with an embroidered Playboy bunny at the top ($12), perfect for the ’80s-obsessed vixen who’s not afraid to flaunt what she’s got.

Forget having to find the perfect pair of tall boots this winter; make a statement and keep those calves warm until spring, when — who knows? — maybe jellies will be next in line for a little comeback of their own.
